Abstract:
In order to explore environment-friendly methods for controlling stored grain insects, the
C. reticulata peel essential oil was prepared by Soxhlet method with anhydrous diethyl ether, and its repellent, contact, and fumigant activities was investigated against the confused flour beetle,
Tribolium confusum adult,a major stored grain insect worldwide. The results showed that the
C. reticulata peel essential oil had strong repellent, contact, and fumigant activities against
T. confusum adults, which significantly enhanced with increasing exposure dosages during the same exposure time. Percentage repellency values of
C. reticulata essential oil against
T. confusum adults achieved over 80.0% at the dosage of 0.4 μL/cm
2 after 60 h of exposure. For contact toxicity, the corrected mortality of
T. confusum adults reached over 95.0% after 72 h of exposure at the dosage of 0.6 μL/cm
2. For fumigant toxicity, the corrected mortality of
T. confusum adults reached over 90.0% after 2 d at the dosages of more than 40 μL/L air. These results suggest that the
C. reticulata peel essential oil had strong potential in controlling
T. confusum adults in practice.
