THE CHARACTERISTICS OF HYDROGENATED COTTONSEED OIL AND ITS APPLICATION ON CANDLE MATERIALS

    • The application of hydrogenated vegetable oil on candle materials has attracted more and more attention due to its advantages of green environment protection, renewable and longer burning time than paraffin. However, cottonseed oil (CSO),one of the five major oils in China, has rarely been applied on wax materials..Hydrogenated cottonseed oil (HCSO) with different melting points (32.4-61.9℃) was prepared by using cottonseed oil as raw material, nickel as catalyst, under the conditions of reaction temperature 170℃,H2pressure 275.8 kPa,reaction time 0.5-6 h,and iodine value 1.1-73.0 g/100 g.P-NMR,PLM and XRD analysis were applied to characterize their physical properties, such as solid fat content, microstructure and crystal form. The obtained hydrogenated cottonseed oil had a fine needle structure, which was easy to encapsulate the liquid oil and reduce the greasy of wax.The crystal form of hydrogenated cottonseed oil was beta-prime with long-time stability, which was helpful to delay the frosting phenomenon caused by temperature fluctuation during storage.Overall,HCSO was a better vegetable oil-based candle material for industrial application. The research on improving the properties of HCSO,widening the use range of raw materials and optimizing the properties of the wax should be further carried out.
