EFFECT OF DIFFERENT ODORS EXPERIENCE OF TRIBOLIUM CASTANEUM ADULTS ON THEIR SUBSEQUENT ORIENTATION BEHAVIOR

    • The influence of different odor sources experience of Tribolium castaneum adults on their subsequent orientation behavior was investigated with the different time of hunger after experiencing the volatiles from the whole wheat flour for different times. The experiment set four starvation durations of 0(as a control),6,12,and 24 h,four experiencing durations of 0,6,12 and 24 h,three odor sources from whole wheat flour, broken wheat kernels and whole wheat kernels. The number of T.castaneum adults selecting different odor sources was determined after 24 h.The results showed that after 0 or 24 h of starvation periods, the selection coefficient of T.castaneum adults significantly decreased with the increasing time of experiencing odors from whole wheat flour, and the lowest selection coefficients of T.castaneum adults were 30.0% and 36.7%,respectively.The selection coefficient of T.castaneum adults after 6 h of starvation increased with the increasing time of experiencing odors from whole wheat flour, and the highest selection coefficient of T.castaneum adults was 53.3%.Therefore,using the learning behavior of T.castaneum adults had potent potential for implementing integrated pest management.
